Realtors give legislative session high marks

From builders to brokers, the 2011 state legislative session brought benefits to an industry that has been battered by market forces for the past five years.

Perhaps the biggest gains in the session for real estate developers and home builders came with the repeal of Florida's landmark Growth Management Act, which linked infrastructure funding for roads and schools to new construction and provided state oversight on development.

But real estate agents also scored impressive legislative victories in the session ended May 7, according to their trade group. Most notably, the Florida Realtors association successfully pushed through a bill -- sponsored by Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton -- that would lift a cap on state housing trust funds. Removing the $243 million cap on the Sadowski Housing Trust Fund had been an association goal since 2007.
