Legislature extends helping hand to veterans

While the state Legislature wrangles with such high-profile issues as the budget, education, pensions and jobs, lawmakers also put military veterans in the spotlight. Some 50 bills are circulating in the House and Senate that benefit former service members and their families -- a number higher than in the recent past.

With more than 1.6 million veterans calling Florida home, the third largest such population in the country behind California and Texas, the Legislature is deservedly recognizing some of their special needs.

With more and more combat veterans returning to civilian life after the long conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the timing is ripe for that legislative action.
