Appraiser throws a curve ball

Someone should have seen this coming.

Back when the city and county cut the deal with the Marlins ballclub to finance the lion’s share of a baseball stadium, along with parking garages, there was no independent, elected property tax appraiser to examine the fine print and determine whether the agreement would make the city liable for unexpected property taxes.

Enter Pedro Garcia. In early 2008, county voters overwhelmingly decided to change the appointed property appraiser’s job to an elected office, and on Dec. 16 Mr. Garcia was elected to the position. Now Mr. Garcia gets to play a big role on tax matters, and he says Miami may be on the hook for $1.2 million in taxes for the garages.
